Wellness is a term that you are probably familiar with, but what does this trendy word really mean? Wellness is defined as “the quality or state of being in good health especially as an actively pursued goal; Lifestyle that promotes wellness.” While this definition may seem pretty straight-forward at face value, there are eight Dimensions of Wellness that provide additional insight into this state of being:
These eight Dimensions can be surprising at first glance. Traditionally, health in the United State is measured via Physical Wellness, and sometimes Emotional Wellness as well. As for the other six, how do they fit in?
The backbone of wellness is the concept that it is a lifestyle. One of the primary reasons that many individuals have a challenging time sticking to a health regiment is that the implementation of new healthy habits are kept separate from the rest of one’s life. In wellness, each of these eight Dimensions are critical and affect each other. Think of a domino effect: if one domino falls down, the rest eventually follow.
So how can Wellness, this broad topic, be introduced to young students in the classroom? Start with the eight Dimensions! Financial wellness lessons can be worked into math lessons, physical wellness can be worked into physical education, intellectual and occupational wellness can be worked into the exploration of new topics throughout the semester, and social wellness can be addressed as children learn to develop relationships and learn together.
The value in wellness is that it can not only support students in their learning in the classroom, but can also help them to develop their own healthy lifestyle habits that they will grow up with and bring into their communities.
